What Is IFS Therapy?

Developed by Dr. Richard Schwartz, IFS views the mind as an internal system made up of distinct “parts,” each with its own emotions, beliefs, and roles. This inner diversity is completely normal—it’s how the human mind organizes experience. You might have a part that strives for perfection, another that avoids conflict, and one that carries deep sadness.

IFS helps you develop compassionate curiosity toward each part, recognizing that even the most reactive or protective parts hold positive intentions. Rather than trying to eliminate symptoms, IFS restores balance by helping your parts trust your Self—the calm, confident, and compassionate core of your being—to lead.

The Three Types of Parts

Managers work proactively to keep you safe and in control. They might show up as perfectionism, people-pleasing, or planning. These parts work hard to protect you from pain and vulnerability.

Exiles carry burdens from painful past experiences—childhood wounds, traumatic memories, or emotions like shame and fear that feel overwhelming. Other parts work to keep these exiles hidden.

Firefighters react when exiles threaten to surface, using distraction or numbing strategies to protect you from unbearable emotional pain. While these responses may seem destructive, they're desperately trying to help.

Your Core Self

Beneath all these parts is your Self—a natural state of consciousness defined by compassion, curiosity, and calm. When your parts trust the Self to lead, internal harmony and healing can unfold naturally.

How IFS Therapy Helps

Our approach at Bellevue Counseling focuses on helping you access your Self and build relationships with your parts. Through this compassionate process, parts that once felt overwhelming or rigid become more flexible and trusting. They share their stories and release the burdens they've been carrying.

The Unburdening Process: A central aspect of IFS is helping parts release painful beliefs, emotions, and sensations—often rooted in childhood or traumatic experiences. When a part feels truly heard by your Self, it can let go of these burdens and take on a healthier role in your life.

Integration with Other Therapies: IFS works beautifully alongside other evidence-based approaches we offer. We often integrate IFS with EMDR therapy for trauma processing, combine it with trauma-focused CBT for deeper cognitive work, and use it to enhance ERP for anxiety and OCD treatment. This integrated approach ensures you receive comprehensive, personalized care.

Who Benefits from IFS Therapy?

Trauma and PTSD

IFS addresses the complex impact of trauma on your internal system, helping wounded parts feel safe enough to heal. The process is naturally paced by what you're ready to handle, making it particularly effective for individuals carrying trauma from childhood experiences, relationship betrayals, loss, or overwhelming life circumstances.

Anxiety and Worry

Anxiety often reflects protective parts working overtime to keep you safe. IFS helps you develop a different relationship with these anxious parts, understanding their concerns while helping them trust that your Self can handle challenging situations. This creates lasting relief rather than temporary symptom management.

Grief and Loss

Grief activates numerous parts—sadness, anger, numbness, guilt. IFS creates space for all these responses, helping you navigate loss with less internal conflict and more integration. Your parts learn to carry grief differently, with less suffering and greater acceptance.

ADHD Support

Living with ADHD involves managing competing internal needs and attention demands. IFS helps you understand these experiences without self-judgment, developing Self-leadership to navigate challenges with more clarity and compassion.

Eating Disorders and Body Image

IFS takes a non-shaming approach to eating disorder behaviors, exploring the protective intentions behind them. As parts feel heard and Self offers alternative forms of support, your relationship with food and your body can shift toward greater acceptance and health.

Couples and Family Therapy

IFS provides powerful tools for relationship healing. Couples learn to recognize when parts are activated and help each other return to Self-led communication. Families develop a shared language for understanding internal and interpersonal dynamics, creating more harmonious connections.

What to Expect at Bellevue Counseling

Your First Session

We begin by getting to know you and creating space for you to share what has been weighing on you. This initial session focuses on listening, understanding your concerns, and exploring whether IFS feels like the right fit. We never rush into interventions—building trust is foundational to effective healing.

Ongoing Therapy

As therapy progresses, you'll develop awareness of your parts and learn to relate to them from Self. Sessions often include internal focus time, where you communicate with parts while we provide guidance and support. The work is experiential—you're not just talking about parts, you're experiencing them and fostering internal transformation.

We typically meet weekly or biweekly over a period of several months to a year, depending on your goals. Every therapeutic journey is unique and personalized to your needs.

A Life Skill Beyond the Therapy Room

IFS becomes a tool you can use in daily life. As you develop the ability to access Self and work with your parts, you'll find yourself less reactive in conflicts, more present with loved ones, and more confident navigating challenges. The compassion you learn to extend inward naturally flows outward to others.
